PREREQUISITE

IMPORTANT : To install and run Ancestris, you need Java from Sun Microsystem (now Oracle).

To check which version you have on your system, you can visit the Verify Java Version web page.

The official releases: version 0.5.x

It depends upon your Operating system : Windows, Linux, Mac Os.

Windows

• Ancestris :
  Available is an .exe file which make Ancestris easy to install. Just download it, execute it, and voilà. It's done.
  Once Ancestris installed one time, it will be automatically updated using your internet connection.
  ancestris-windows.exe (<------=== Click on the link to download the file)

Linux

• Ancestris :
  What is your Linux distro? Here are the links to download the right package.
  As the download files are often updated, the links lead you to the french download section. These are the information you need to know what to do.

• Ubuntu () - You can download the .deb package. Click on the file name "Ancestris pour Ubuntu". Ancestris will be installed on your system.
  But you may want to go further and add Arvernes among your repositories, to be automatically adviced once a new Ubuntu package is available. Follow the instructions given in the french section. Google translation engine will be your friend there. If you have problem to understand how to do, leave us a message

• Mandriva () - A .rpm package is maintained, so you can download it, simply by clicking on the link "Fichier Ancestris au format RPM".
  Two options: when you download the file, you can open it using Software Installer, or you can download it, open a terminal, and as root, launching the installation by runing the following commands : "rpm -ivh ancestris*".

• Redhat () - See above the information given for Mandriva.

• Fedora () - See above the information given for Mandriva.

• Other Linux Systems - A .sh file is available. Download and execute it (open a terminal, and you can put the file just downloaded, where you want and execute the following command "sh ancestris-linux.sh" () - This file can be installed on any Linux computers.
  Click on the red line "Version x.x-x du xx/xx/201x" I do not give here the version number nor date, as this file is updated from time to time.

Mac

• Ancestris :
  We provide a .zip file, which should be easy to install. On the french section we give you a step by step process to download and install it on a Mac system. If you want me to do the same in that section, please give me screen captures of your own language, and I will create a special section for that. The file for Mac OS is "ancestris-osx.zip". To download it, click on its name.

You want to be inform of new releases. You have questions. You need help. Feel free to register to our mailing list. You can post there in english, or in french.

You would like to see Ancestris to be improved in certain directions. The mailing list is there for you.

How to register

• I want to subscribe (two ways) :

• Just send a message to:

"ancestris-subscribe@ml.arvernes.com". You don't have to write something in the body of your message, but in the line "Subject", just write the word subscribe. That's all.

Or:

• Just click on the Email address beside ancestris-subscribe@ml.arvernes.com this will open your mail client and will put the correct words in each field. What to do next? Just send the message. Easy, isn't it.

How to write to the mailing list SysOp

How to be referenced on Ancestris users Map

We think it's great to see where are located Ancestris users. As we have just opened this english web site dedicated to Ancestris, you have the opportunity to be located on it.

To be referenced, you have to send a mail to Francois with your latitude, longitude, your name, your city name, and your operating system (Windows, Linux, Mac, OS/2, etc...) and you will be on that map.

To know your coordinates, you can use the Acme web site. Give me your coordinates in the following format 48.00467 N // 7.84430 E, (eg: Hermann Vögelein, Freiburg im Breisgau, Deutschland 48.00467 N 7.84430 E - Windows XP)
